A Fox Can’T Smell Its Own Hole

A fox can’t smell its own hole. This is because a fox has a very keen sense of smell and can detect the scent of other animals but not its own. This is due to the fact that a fox’s body is covered in fur which traps the animal’s own scent and prevents it from being detected by its own nose.

This phenomenon is known as the “self-masking” effect and is common among many animals not just foxes.

The self-masking effect is thought to be an evolutionary adaptation that allows animals to avoid being detected by predators. After all if a predator can smell a fox then the fox is at a disadvantage and is more likely to be caught and eaten.

By masking its own scent a fox can avoid predation and increase its chances of survival.

So the next time you see a fox remember that it can’t smell its own hole!
